Film Review: Mumunting Lihim

Mumunting lihim is a film that is based on comradeship. This film is my favorite of all since it’s the film that I can relate to. The film wants to convey the pain of losing a friend, a friend that you don’t treat as a friend, but a family member as well. The death of Judy Ann test their friendship since Judy Ann left journals of her- The journals contain lots of concealed truth that is hidden for many years and the journal also illustrates the negative traits of each member of the group.

Though the diaries have spilled the innermost secrets of each individuality, in the end the truth keeps them altogether. Despite the flaws of each, characters have accepted and embrace the imperfections and began to cherish the company of each other.

In reality, friends are different. We have to accept that nobody is perfect, and we have to learn to accept who they are. the movie’s profound message made me realize that we all have a  friend that will make us  feel safe and secure, someone that will always be there on your side, regardless of what obstacle you encounter. There’s a friend that will care resemble as a long lost sister- and God sent that friend to mold us according to who we are today.
The Mumunting lihim never fail to make the audience feel the essence of friendship matters.

Film Review: Raymond Red's Kamera Obskura

RAYMOND RED'S KAMERA OBSKURA

The film Kamera Obskura was a Director's showcase by Ramond Red.  It talks about the discovery of an obscure lost film that has a several issues and events happening in reality. The title "Kamera Obskura" which means "dark room". This starts when a prisoner was locked in a dark room and was able to see a small hole on the wall that actually see what's happening outside the room which connotes the reality. He confused about what is reflected on the wall, so he was able to go out and see what's happening in the world. Corruption and betrayal are shown in the movie that is being represented as the levels of the floor of the building through different levels of social classes.

This film is the first silent film I've ever watched and seems that it is a very good one. Raymond Red has a wide understanding about the media, arts and photography. By this, he was able to make a very incredible film "Kamera Obskura". The film has a great actors and actresses that portrays a very good role on each part of the story. It is good to have the idea of futuristic world that represents the vintage camera. This film may open our minds and made us realize the works of the people who has the privilege to lead or rule over the world that may happen in this generation.

Posas movie review

I somehow liked Posas (shackled). Even though for me the film was full
of frustration and anger due to the characters being victims of the
pickpocket (Nico Antonio), the film was well acted and well paced. This
film serves as an eye opener too, making us all aware of the corruption,
brutality and inefficiency of the cops without directly stating it rather
using symbolisms in order to state a message. The film shows us how
people tend to do what they're not supposed to do for them to survive
and to support their family. We can't blame them for what they are doing
but they should learn from their mistakes and change for the better.

Ang Nawawala and Bwakaw Film Reviews by Alex Tan

New Breed Full-Length: Ang Nawawala (What Isn’t There)
directed by Marrieta Jamora

Plot
Gibson, being fetched by his elder sister at the airport, returns to Manila after staying in abroad for ten (10) years.  He still could not speak after the long time.  He would travel a lot just to be away from that house but there was nothing he could do for it is his real home.  Gibson’s mother never changed from the moment they last saw each other for she was still strict to Promise, his younger sister, to concentrate on her studies.  His father still fronts the delight in him even though a conflict between him and his wife continues to arouse.

From all the stress in the family, Gibson’s childhood friend, Teddy, came to the rescue.  They went to an art exhibit where Teddy made his moves to this girl that soon will be moved by Gibson’s life and love for music.  Enid was the girl that Gibson surprisingly liked because when she was told that he cannot talk, she did not say a word and Gibson was overwhelmed.  In between these scenes, Gibson’s childhood was shown running in the field with his twin brother that he usually has dialogues with through having a soothing feel.

As Gibson and Enid get closer to each other, I can say that they have a mutual feeling for they enjoy each other’s company, their taste in music is the same, and in short they make each other happy.  Gibson shared the videos that he made to Enid that he only kept for himself.  Gibson bought Enid a gift and in return, Enid made a website especially for Gibson’s videos to be recognized.  Love was given and received.  Gibson’s childhood continues to reminisce as the twins enjoy the moment.

Enid, who just gotten from a break up, has feelings for Gibson but there was something left in her that wanted to give her ex a second chance.  After a number of years, Gibson finally talked and said “I kinda love you” to Enid and it struck her but he had nothing to stop her.  Gibson visits his twin and came with the realizations and what ifs for everything that happened.

It was New Year’s Eve where chit chats, laughter, fireworks were present except for Gibson’s mother.  Gibson went to fetch his mother in her room and just by looking at her, he cried.  Gibson’s mother asked who was, and that was the only moment that Gibson answered her after the accident that caused his twin brother’s death.

Gibson, who was portrayed by Dominic Roco, was not able to talk since he was ten (10) years old because his twin brother Jamie died in front of him and he thinks that he is the reason behind it.  He also ponders that he should have died since Jamie was the favorite one.  Even though Gibson is the main character in the movie, I also liked how Jamie, portrayed by Felix Roco, exposed the relationship between him and his twin.

The film is not focused on the love story but more on the problem within the family and Gibson trying to accept the fact that he was the reason behind all of these.  The movie was very touching especially the last part where Gibson’s mother was awaken by Gibson’s reply to her.

Director Showcase: Bwakaw
directed by Jun Robles Lana

Bwakaw is such a heartwarming movie for it displays the affection and relationship of friends; best friends.  Rene is an old man who is ready to die and leave everything that he has to his friends.  All of his relatives are in other countries that is why he is alone and very thankful for Bwakaw.  Bwakaw is the stray dog that Rene found and loved so well.  But when he found out that Bwakaw has an illness, there he realized how important his pet to him.

Through the help of Sol, the tricycle driver who at first despised Rene and his dog in riding his tricycle, Bwakaw was able to be checked by different veterinarians and these were the moment where Rene starts to develop his feelings for him.  Momentarily, they became close where it came to the point that Sol visits Rene’s house by fixing some appliances and when Rene pecked the drunken Sol, that was where their friendship ended for all the awkwardness.

After some time, Bwakaw was not able to hold on anymore and died by his mentor’s side.  It is understandable why Rene is known for his grumpiness because he did not really have a family by his side and living alone is such a lonesome experience.

In camera overview, the part where Bwakaw stayed at the veterinarian’s clinic to be checked and Rene walked and went home alone.  The view of the camera was tilted down just like the view of Bwakaw, being left behind.  The sadness on that part was coming from the mentor and the reason behind it, which is missing Bwakaw.  Another part was the last scene where Rene fixed his house to look live a livable and normal one.  A long shot was taken when he was walking down a long road and it slowly zooms out.

The lighting and color of the film was mostly light and used available light.  Rene and Bwakaw were always together that is why their shadows were composed side by side.  Some mise en scenes were used also in the movie.  The house where Rene lives is parallel to his own lifestyle.  He was ready to die that was why his house was almost empty and everything was packed already but when Bwakaw died and he came to the realization that he is still alive, he fixed and unpacked his belongings and made his house a livable and welcoming one.  Another mise en scene was the Santo Entierro that is placed on Rene’s bed, lying beside him every night.  This Santo was told to be get bigger and bigger as the time goes by and its meaning is also to heal those who are in deep faith.

We should not waste our lives on waiting for something to happen, what we must do is to just cherish the moment that we have at the moment and live in it because it will never come again just for us to relish it once again.

Aparisyon (Vincent Sandoval)

Aparisyon

by Vincent Sandoval

Official movie poster

Due to the poster's Dark appearance, I first thought that this is a horror film - with the nuns, burnt papers and other forms of creepiness, but I was proven wrong.

It was actually about the silent, simple lives of monk nuns living in the mountain and away from the rest of the civilization. The setting was during the reign of Marcos and the martial law.

simple lives of monk nuns
These nuns wanted to present themselves to God as perfectly as they can. Although, as they try to be faithful to their devotion, they also have to face their temptations- the darkness within each of them.

Sister Remy & Sister Lourdes before "what happened"

Say for example, Sister Remy (Mylene Dizon) who became obsessed with updating herself on her brother's critical condition after being denied to leave the monastery, pulled herself away from doing only what she was assigned to do - she disobeyed, and she lied. After doing her task, she attends a secret meeting, therefore going back to the convent much later than usual.

Sister Remy & Sister Lourdes after "what happened
As she was accompanied by Sister Lourdes (Jodi Sta. Maria), the latter went into a trouble of being raped and getting pregnant. The evil inside of her showed up when she said she wanted the unborn to be gone. Sister Vera (Racquel Villavicencio) and Sister Ruth (Fides Cuyugan-Asensio), as superiors, were too inclined to the monastic rules and were too afraid to help out and face the problems.

These are what devoured their souls. The line between faith and one's own will is thinning. Religion, morality, and society.

What's great about this film is that it really showed silence in a different way, maybe the silence of the monastery and mountain itself contributes to this effect.
maybe the silence of the monastery and mountain itself contributes to this effect.

The scenes were shot nicely that the viewers can easily divert their attention to what they are supposed to focus on.
It may almost be a completely silent film, but the scenes, and most especially the sounds kept the viewers' eyes on the screen. It wasn't boring at all!

Mga dayo film review

The first time I saw the trailer of Mga Dayo I felt moved by the trailer since somehow I felt connected because my parents were a former overseas Filipino worker. Mga Dayo directed by Julius Sotoyomar Cena made a story out of the “green card marriage”-which genuinely happens in contemporary.

Alex (Sue Prado) is getting betrothed for the sake of the green card, suddenly the guy he supposed to marry with left her in the wedding day, which is the indication that she’s unable to possess a green card. Miriam (Janela Buhain) has a conflict with her husband and got separated with her after she got the green card. Ella (Olga Natividad) already have a green card and she’s able to bring her mother to see the scenic places of the foreign land. All in all, these three ladies in the midst of thanksgiving in other country shows the struggles and stakes they provoke just to be able to attain a card that will give hope and to achieve their dreams that they won’t render in our own country- Philippines.

The film tackles the reality; We Filipinos find the life we wanted not in our own country, but in the leading countries, and the film presents the slice of life.. The colonial mentality is evidently presented, and the ways of survival is intertwine in the message of the film; the marriage is used to be able to get the benefit of green card. Divorce is done when the agreements have accomplished.

The film elaborates the living of a Filipino living in the far away land working, spending the pain of isolation away from the family just to sustain the needs, and to feed the hunger of each family member awaiting in the Philippines.

Intoy syokoy ng kalye marino movie review

I must say that intoy syokoy ng kalye marino is one of the best

cinemalaya film of 2012. The actors and actresses in this film do not just

simply act for the sake of having a job and getting paid; rather, you'll see

the determination and their passion in acting since you'll really feel that

what they are doing is coming from the heart. Intoy syokoy ng kalye

marino is about Kalye Marino’s best tahong caretaker named Intoy who

has this feeling towards Doray. Intoy hardly complains about anything

and he always think positively. While Doray, Intoy's friend, was left to

take care of her siblings and she ended up being a cheap prostitute just

to provide her siblings' needs. Intoy strived to have his own bundles of

tahong so he can have Doray, leave the place since it brought them too

much burden and pain and for them to be together forever. Heavy drama

and tragic it is since the film pointed out different problems a person can

experience and it keeps us aware about reality and what others are facing

right now.
